Things to Understand
About the "Art Room"
The "Art Room" is quite different from the other rooms in a school/outside of school program. I consider it a real replica of an "Artist's Studio".
Studios are environments where artists will share rooms, work spaces, resources, and most importantly, ideas and questions.
There is a lot going on in the studio! People are often moving around, retrieving supplies, talking, and getting messy. Here is a visual to provide a better understanding of how a studio environment benefits students in their thinking processes and art-making processes.

WE PAY ATTENTION TO THE BASICS, BUT LEAVE ROOM TO EXPLORE WHAT ARTISTS ARE WRESTLING WITH NOW!
The "basics" I am referring to are the elements of art and principles of design, used in art instruction for decades.
Elements of Art: line, shape, form, value, color, space, and texture
Principles of Design: balance, proportion, emphasis, variety, movement, rhythm, and harmony
In order to prepare students for 21st century discussions and experiences, I also consider the Post-Modern Principles outlined by Olivia Gude. These distilled new "principles" emphasize the artist's ability to make specific choices to convey meaning in their work in a variety of ways.
